It seems appropriate, on International Women’s Day, to share this 1933 Detroit News article about a 25-year-old Frida Kahlo, who hadn't yet made her mark as a painter but would go on to eclipse her husband’s (Diego Rivera) fame as an artist. Of course, her work is among the most recognizable of anyone in the history of art. Rivera was in Detroit to paint massive murals for the city of Detroit and the 25 year-old Kahlo accompanied him. The author of the article, Florence Davies, acknowledges Kahlo's skill, "Señora Rivera's painting is by no means a joke; because, however she may laugh when you ask her about it, the fact remains that she has acquired a very skillful and beautiful style, painting in the small with miniature-like technique, which is as far removed from the heroic figures of Rivera as could well be imagined." The self-taught Kahlo also pokes fun at her husband, cheekily noting, "Of course, he does pretty well for a little boy, but it is I who am the big artist."
